Aa Ab Laut Chalen (translation: Come, Let’s Go Back) is a 1999 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Rishi Kapoor, the only film he directed in his career. . The screenplay of the film was written by Sachin Bhowmick and Rumi Jaffrey. The film premiered in India and the United States on 22 January 1999. It starred Rajesh Khanna, Akshaye Khanna, and Aishwarya Rai and was directed by R.K. Films’ final production.
Rohan Khanna is an unemployed graduate who lives in India with his mother. A former neighbor Ranjit, who now runs a hotel in the US with his American wife, suggests that Rohan should move to America and Rohan eagerly accepts. His mother disapproved because his father Balraj left the family to move to America, where he died.
At the airport in New York, Rohan befriends Sardar Khan, a Pakistani taxi driver. Sardar drops Rohan at Ranjit’s hotel. Rohan learns that Ranjit and his wife misbehave with his parents and use the hotel for prostitution. Rohan confronts Ranjit about this and is asked to leave.
Sardar Rooms with another cab driver, Iqbal Singh, a Punjabi man from India, and they offer Rohan a stay and a job. While at work, Rohan meets Pooja, a young Indian woman. They become friends and eventually fall in love.
Rohan asks Pooja to accompany him. Sardar Khan helps the couple to find a job, but they do not pay well. Despite his hard work, Rohan has earned very little money and has only four months left on his visa. On the advice of friends, Rohan decides to get citizenship by marrying Green Card. Rohan and Pooja meet the tempting and rich Lovleen, who agrees to a false marriage. After the wedding, Rohan gets completely wrapped up in Lovleen, leaving his friends and Pooja and moving to Lovleen’s mansion.
Pooja finds a job as a caretaker for Balraj, a wealthy Indian man who is elderly and very ill. Unbeknownst to him, Balraj is Rohan’s father and is not dead. Balraj has a son, Karan, who is spoiled and proud. Karan is often intimidated by Vikram, an associate of Marco, a dangerous drug dealer, who uses him as a courier to send drugs to and around the US in exchange for paying his debts for his luxuries. Balraj starts treating Pooja as his daughter and asks her to marry Karan. Karan sees this as an opportunity to get more money from his father so that he can pay off Marco’s debt.
Rohan gets tired of Lovleen, realizing that he is in love with Pooja. He goes back to his friends, who tell him where to find him. He apologizes to her and asks her to return to India to marry. Pooja agrees and Rohan gives her a locket with his mother’s picture. Pooja tells this to Balraj, who encourages her, without knowing that Rohan is her son.
Karan becomes interested in Pooja and tries to intimidate her into marrying her. After a confrontation with her, her locket broke. When Balraj looks inside, he is surprised to see the photo of his wife. When Pooja reveals that Rohan gave it to her, Balraj learns that Rohan will be his son. He is afraid that Rohan might hate him, so he does not tell Pooja.
After hearing from Pooja that Rohan is struggling to make a living, Balraj tells Pooja to call Rohan for an interview at his company. A grateful Rohan is offered a well-paying career and a cash bonus from the generous Balraj. Rohan uses his new wealth to take care of Ranjit’s parents. He has arrested Ranjit and his wife for illegally possessing the passports of Ranjit’s parents and their prostitution activities.
After some time, Pooja and Rohan decide to return to India. Before they leave, Balraj confesses to Rohan that he is his different father and explains why he never returned. Rohan is angry at first, but when his mother forgives Balraj over the phone, Rohan decides to do the same. Karan learns about this and decides to retaliate by physically assaulting him only to be interrupted by Rohan, who has taken his father’s side. Balraj disapproved of Karna and handed over most of his property to him.
Balraj, Rohan, and Pooja decide to go back to India. At the airport, they are surprised to see Karan with NYPD officer Jack Patel, who has turned a new leaf by arresting Marco and his gang and is officially pardoned by the law.
